Reviews and social proof

Shoppers trust other buyers more than they trust a brand's own copy. Product reviews, ratings, customer photos and answered questions help them judge fit, quality and whether a product does what the page claims. They also tell you what customers like and what they complain about, which feeds back into product pages, descriptions and even the products themselves.

The tools here collect that content and show it where buyers decide. They send review requests by email or text after delivery, collect star ratings, written reviews, photos and videos, and display them on product pages with filters and summaries. Many add a questions and answers section, show ratings on collection pages, and send review data to Google so star ratings can appear in shopping listings and search results.

AI features in this category summarize reviews into a short paragraph, pull out themes such as sizing or durability, help reply to reviews and flag spam. Summaries can help busy shoppers, but check them now and then. A summary that leans positive when reviews are mixed will hurt trust once shoppers read further.

Follow the rules. In the United States, the FTC has rules against fake reviews, buying reviews and hiding negative ones, and platforms such as Google and Amazon have their own policies. Ask every buyer, not only happy ones. Disclose any incentive you offer for a review. Never edit a review to change its meaning. Rules in other regions are similar and change often, so check with your own counsel.

Put reviews where they help the decision. Show the star rating near the product title and the price, place written reviews and customer photos below the main product details, and let shoppers filter by rating or by topics such as fit. On collection pages, a rating and review count beside each product helps shoppers choose what to open. Answer questions quickly, since an unanswered question on a product page tells shoppers nobody is listening. Read your reviews as feedback too: a pattern of complaints about sizing or packaging is something to fix as well as answer.

When you compare tools, ask how review requests are timed, which platforms they integrate with, and how widgets affect page speed on mobile. Check whether reviews can be shared with retail partners if you sell through them, and how you can export your reviews if you switch tools later. Your reviews are an asset you have earned, so make sure you can take them with you.

Questions about reviews and social proof

Can I hide negative reviews?

You should not. Suppressing negative reviews breaks FTC rules in the United States and the policies of Google and most marketplaces. It also hurts trust when shoppers notice. Reply to negative reviews and use them to fix product pages.

When should I ask for a review?

After the customer has received and used the product. Many tools time requests from the delivery date, with a different delay for each product type. Test timing, since a product that takes weeks to show results needs a later request.

Can star ratings show up in Google?

Yes, if your review tool sends data to Google in the right format and your listings meet Google's rules. Many tools here support this for shopping listings. Google decides whether ratings appear, so it is not guaranteed.

Can I offer an incentive for reviews?

Rules differ by platform and region. Where incentives are allowed, they must be offered for any review, positive or negative, and disclosed. Some platforms ban them. Check the rules for every channel you sell on.
