Your product data does more selling than most people notice. It feeds your own site search and filters, your product pages, and every listing you send to Google Shopping, marketplaces and social shops. When titles are vague, attributes are missing or prices and stock are out of date, products get rejected from ad channels, filtered out of searches and passed over by shoppers.
The tools here fall into two groups. Feed management tools take your catalog, transform it with rules and send each channel the format it wants: Google wants one set of fields, Amazon another, TikTok and Meta others again. They fix common problems, map your categories to each channel's categories, and flag products that a channel has rejected. Product information management systems, or PIMs, sit further upstream. They hold the master record for every product, with attributes, descriptions, images and translations, and send that data to your store and your feeds.
AI features are common in both. They write or rewrite titles and descriptions for each channel, fill missing attributes from images or existing text, translate content and suggest category mapping. This saves a lot of hand work on large catalogs. It also needs review, because a model can invent a material, a size or a claim the product can't support, and wrong product data leads to returns and complaints.

Which group you need depends on scale. A store with a few hundred products selling on its own site and Google Shopping may only need a feed tool or the feed features in its platform. A brand with thousands of products, several sales channels, retail partners and multiple languages usually needs a PIM to keep one version of the truth.
Treat product data as ongoing work. Channels change their required fields, new products arrive with gaps, and prices and stock move every day. Set a routine to review feed errors each week, assign someone to fix them, and keep the source data in your store or PIM clean, since a feed tool can only fix so much on the way out.
When you compare tools, ask which channels are supported, how often data syncs, and how quickly price and stock changes reach each channel. Ask whether the vendor offers managed service, where their staff build and maintain your feeds, or your own team does that work. And ask for a sample of how errors are reported, since a rejected product nobody notices is lost sales.
A feed tool takes your catalog and formats it for each sales or ad channel. A PIM holds the master product record, with attributes, copy and images, and sends it to your store and your feeds. Large catalogs selling on many channels often use both.
Many tools here can draft titles and descriptions from your attributes. Review every draft before it goes live. A model can add details that are wrong, such as a material or size, and incorrect product data leads to returns and complaints.
Common causes are missing fields such as GTINs or brand, prices or stock that don't match your site, image problems and policy issues. Feed tools show errors for each channel and let you fix many of them with rules instead of editing products one by one.
Not always. A platform's own sales channel can be enough for a small catalog on one or two channels. A feed tool helps when you sell on many channels, need custom rules for titles and labels, or have frequent rejections.
